Big Nick
began drawing from an early age, studied art and art history in school and went on to be a student at the Seven Hills College of Art. In 1977 he got his first tattoo by the infamous Billy Phillips which sparked his interest in the field of tattooing. A career in security and body guarding prevented him from delving deeper into the art and it wasn’t until he looked at going back into the military that he thought seriously about it as a way to put some good ink on his fellow soldiers.
John Rainey of Alternative Arts in Charlotte NC would be the catalyst. John & Nick met while Nick was body guarding Warrant during their American tour with Firehouse and Trixter. John came on the road and tattooed all the members of the band and half the roadies which wet Nick’s appetite again.
On his return to the UK he sought out local artists and began working on the side with the idea of going back into the military and tattooing after hours. After a couple of years of that and discovering that the military thing wasn’t going to happen he contacted his old friend John to ask his advice about opening his own studio in the UK and John invited him to work with him in the States instead.
After a couple of years of working with John it was time to move on and Nick left to open Ace Custom Tattoos, Charlotte’s number one shop eight years running.
Now he’s back and at it again in his newest studio “Sinners & Saints Tattoos” in Lake Norman just north of Charlotte.
